Are Skin Whitening Products Safe?

There are a number of different methods to whiten the skin including bleaching creams, patches and even surgery. The most common of these is bleaching cream which can be used on the face or body. The most common type of bleaching cream is hydroquinone which has been used for decades for its skin whitening properties.

Precaution

Hydroquinone has been studied extensively and does not have any side effects when used properly. However, it can cause severe irritations in people who are allergic to it or those who have sensitive skin. If you have any of these conditions you should avoid using hydroquinone products until you consult with your doctor first.

Hydroquinone products may also cause temporary staining on clothing and other fabrics if it gets into contact with them during application. This can be avoided by wearing rubber gloves when handling hydroquinone products and washing your hands thoroughly afterwards.

There are many creams on the market today that claim to be effective at lightening your skin tone but they are often contaminated with harmful chemicals such as arsenic or mercury. This is why it is so important to do research before purchasing any product.

Side effects are rare and can include:

Redness or itching at the site of application. This should go away within a few hours. If not, or if you develop a rash, stop using the product and call your doctor.

In some cases, skin irritation may occur that is similar to chemical burns. Stop using the product and contact your doctor if this occurs.

Skin irritation is much more likely to occur when you use skin whitening products that contain acids, such as hydroquinone or glycolic acid. These products can cause redness, swelling and pain at the site of application. Itchiness may also occur as a side effect. If these symptoms occur, stop using these products immediately and contact your doctor for further instructions about how to treat this reaction.

The first thing to consider when looking for a skin whitening product is the side effect profile. Some products contain ingredients that have proven to cause irritation and redness, while others include ingredients that can irritate the skin.

In general, any ingredient that is known to cause skin irritation should be avoided at all costs. This includes tree nuts (such as almonds) and some soy products. If you experience any irritation from your skin whitening product, discontinue use immediately and see your doctor.

Other potential issues with skin whitening products include the following:

  • Skin discoloration

  • Hair loss

  • Irritation of the eye area

If you experience any side effects after using a skin whitening product, discontinue use immediately and speak with your dermatologist about alternative treatments.
