In Greek and Roman mythology, Zeus hosted a grand wedding for a goddess named Thetis, whom he loved. Most gods were invited, but the goddess of discord, Eris, was not. Angered by this, Eris threw a golden apple into the wedding, causing chaos.
The golden apple had "To the most beautiful goddess" written on it, which led three goddesses to each claim that the apple was theirs.
They were Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
For the 'honor of beauty', Zeus entrusted the judgment to Paris, the prince of Troy, and Paris chose Aphrodite.
