What is collagen?

The term collagen is derived from the Greek word kolla, which also means glue. It's a protein that supports bones, skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons and more. Collagen can also be found in our teeth, blood vessels, and corneas. Since it covers the entire body, it is now considered as one of the popular supplements in the world.

The reason behind the popular use of collagen is that as we age, our body's collagen production also decreases. You'll notice that your skin becomes less plump and your bones start to become weak.

There are 5 types of collagen: Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV and Type V. While these are the 5 main types, there are also 16 known types of collagen.

Benefits of collagen

1. May relieve joint pain

Collagen has the ability to promote a healthy cartilage or the rubber-like tissue that protects our joints. Some studies have found collagen can decrease as we age causing our joints to become prone to disorders such as osteoarthritis. Five studies in more than 500 people who are suffering from osteoarthritis revealed that taking 10 grams of collagen per day for 24 weeks can alleviate joint stiffness and joint pain. Supplemental collagen can also accumulate in the cartilage to stimulate tissues.

2. May promote skin health

Collagen is considered as the main component of our skin and that's why we need the right amount of collagen to strengthen our skin. Collagen provides hydration and improves our skin's elasticity. With our age being the primary reason behind the decreasing amount of collagen in our body, it's imperative that we take 3 to 10 grams of collagen per day for 69 days to keep our skin hydrated and elastic. Collagen supplements stimulate the body so it can produce collagen on its own. Collagen can also promote protein production to structure our skin.

3. May boost muscle mass

Collagen is also important for muscle development. According to various studies, collagen supplements can help improve muscle mass, especially in people with sarcopenia, or the loss of muscle mass that occurs as we age. A 12-week study participated by 27 men with sarcopenia revealed that when they took 15 grams of collagen while incorporating an exercise program into their daily routine, gained more muscle mass. However, when compared with whey protein, collagen protein isn't more effective when it comes to building strength or muscle.

4. May prevent bone loss

Our bones have collagen that provides strength and structure, but as we age, the collagen in our body deteriorates as well along with our bone mass. Decreasing bone mass can cause osteoporosis which is characterised by low bone density, leading to a higher risk of bone fractures. Collagen supplements prevent bone breakdown when taken together with calcium. A study participated by 66 women who took 5 grams of collagen per day for 12 months found the supplement to be helpful in increasing bone mineral density.

5. May promote heart health

Researchers have also found out that collagen supplements are helpful in reducing the risk of heart diseases. Collagen also provides structure to our arteries or the blood vessels that are responsible for carrying blood from our heart to the rest of our body. A 6-month study participated by 31 healthy adults who took 16 grams of collagen per day showed that there was a significant reduction in terms of measures of artery stiffness.
